VRB ENERGY NEWS

VRB Energy announced this last week the successful extreme cold weather certification of the 125Kw/500 Kwh vanadium flow battery system installed last year in Northern China, near Daqing in Heilongjiang Province. The outdoor system underwent exhaustive testing in temperatures approaching -40 deg. C. and achieved all required operating specifications.

This is a major achievement for VRB Energy and the battery owner, which is an affiliate of the State Power Investment Corporation, (“SPIC”), one of the five major electricity generation companies in China. It has presence in 46 countries and regions, including 37 countries along the Belt and Road, with businesses covering power project investment, EPC, power plant services, etc.

The news clearly augurs well for new VRB Energy business in cold climates around the world.

VRB Energy’s Daqing China National Demonstration
Platform 125KW/500KWh Vanadium Flow Energy

Storage System Passed Acceptance

The first phase of the “National Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Experimental Demonstration Platform (“Daqing Base”) Project” is progressing smoothly. The 125KW/500KWh containerized outdoor all-vanadium flow battery energy storage system provided by VRB Energy Inc. has recently passed the test organized by the owner SPIC (State Power Investment Corporation) with acceptance.

Daqing Base Project ” is the first national-level photovoltaic and energy storage demonstration experiment platform (base) built by SPIC Qinghai Upper Yellow River Hydropower Development Co., Ltd. The 125KW/500KWh all-vanadium redox flow battery energy storage system forms an important part of the project, which aims to independently, fully, and comprehensively verify the technical performance of all-vanadium redox flow batteries and provide the owner with a larger scope and scale in the follow-up application, and for more accurate technical information and direct project experience.

The first phase of the Project is located in Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province. The annual average temperature in this area is only 4.2 °C, and the extreme temperature in winter can reach -39.2 °C, which is a big challenge for the all-vanadium redox flow battery system arranged outdoors. During the nearly four months of operation with severe testing in winter, the energy storage system has withstood the test of extremely cold weather, and all performance indicators have met relevant specifications and requirements and have been highly recognized by the owner.

“We are very grateful for the hard work and efforts made by SPIC in the successful implementation of this project,” said Dr. Huang Mianyan, CEO of the Company. “This is the northernmost all-vanadium flow battery energy storage project in China. According to the characteristics of extreme climatic conditions at the project site, VRB has designed a container-type cold-resistant outdoor layout product. It can still operate stably in such an extremely cold environment, which proves the feasibility of the all-vanadium redox flow battery technology and also shows that the good stability and reliability of the energy storage products of VRB Energy. This project also greatly expands the climatic area where the all-vanadium redox flow battery technology can be used.”
