VRB Energy Inc. recently announced on its Chinese news platform that it has received Canadian Standards Association/ Underwriters Laboratory (“CSA/UL”) approval for its Generation 3 (“GEN 3”) cell stacks which are the heart of its Vanadium Flow Battery Energy Storage Systems . This safety related certification is recognized internationally and provides VRB Energy the stepping stone to more international business. It has also increased the size of its basic GEN 3 unit module to 1 Megawatt hour and is in the process of having the prototype unit fully tested and certified. Recently, the core component stack in the third-generation all-vanadium flow battery energy storage system of VRB Energy Inc.’s’ subsidiary -VRB Energy Operations (Beijing) Co., Ltd (“VRB Energy”) successfully passed various tests and obtained ANSI/CAN/UL 1973 Certification, by the Canada Standard Association (CSA).

UL1973 is a safety standard for energy storage battery systems in North America, and its scope covers many aspects of the new energy field, such as batteries and battery packs, batteries with electrochemical capacitive hybrid systems, etc. Due to the authority, comprehensiveness, and maturity of the UL 1973 standard, it is currently an internationally recognized and widely accepted battery safety standard, and it is also an important basis for related products to enter regional markets such as North America, Australia, and South America. As an authority for battery and energy storage system certification in accordance with the UL1973 standard, CSA has more than 100 years of unit and brand certification history in North America.

VRB Energy’s third-generation product (VRB ESS Gen3) stack has successfully passed a series of strict, complex, and long-time-span tests by CSA, including vibration test, high temperature test, drop test, and the short-circuit test after 90 days charged and discharged etc. that can only be carried out by qualified third-party testing agencies. The G3 stack tested during this certification has a rated power of 60 kW and a maximum power of 75 kW for long-term operation.

“The fact that VRB Energy’s stack in the third-generation energy storage products can successfully pass the test and obtain the CSA Certificate indicates that the safety of VRB Energy’s latest generation core stack products has surpassed the most stringent level in terms of design, operation and manufacturing based upon international standards. This is an important basis for ensuring the intrinsic safety of vanadium flow battery energy storage products, and it is also the basis for us to expand domestic and foreign markets with third-generation energy storage products.” Dr. Huang Mianyan, CEO of VRB Energy said. “At the same time, through close communication and cooperation with the CSA team, our team has a deeper understanding of the UL1973 standard, providing us with clearer guidelines” on design and manufacture, quality protection, and safe operation of subsequent products”.

Ms. Yanqing Ge, the Vice President of CSA China Region said, “we congratulated VRB Energy for its GE3 stack obtaining ANSI/CAN UL 1973 Certification. The certification of the VRB Energy product marks the excellent performance of its core stack of all-vanadium flow technology in terms of safety. We hope that VRB Energy can make its domestic and foreign customers feel more confident when choosing VRB Energy’s all-vanadium flow energy storage products by having obtained the certification of its products from an authoritative organization like CSA.”
